“Should we do a formal or a semi-formal?” It comes up every year. They’re close cousins, but the differences in venue, attire, budget and vibe matter. Here’s how to tell them apart and choose the right one.
A formal is the chapter’s marquee event of the year, a more elevated venue, dressier attire, and a bigger budget. A semi-formal is a notch more relaxed and affordable, which makes it perfect for a mid-semester event or a second event you couldn’t otherwise fit in.
Formals cost more per head because of the venue, catering and production. Semi-formals stretch further, which is why many chapters do one formal and one or two semi-formals a year. (See our cost breakdown for real numbers.)
Pick a formal when you want the signature, dress-up night of the year and have the budget for it. Pick a semi-formal when you want something fun and social without the full production, or when you want to add a second event to the calendar. Plenty of chapters do both.
